What is Pole fitness?

Updated: May 22

Pole fitness is a sports discipline in which a vertical bar is used. It is practiced by men and women of all ages, regardless of constitution and physical capabilities, often with different sports and life experiences.

The popularity of this sport has increased in the last 15 years due to its many benefits, which include: physical, psychological, emotional and social development, improvement of muscle tone, body strength, endurance, mobility, flexibility, awareness of muscles and their management, coordination, motor abilities, neuromuscular control and release of physical and psychological stress. Pole fitness helps boosting your self-confidence. Progress is very visible and depends on the frequency of training, lifestyle and the past of the individual.

In today's pole fitness, and some other sports styles in which the pole is the main prop - Pole Dance, Pole Artistic, Pole Exotic, people use as less clothes as possible or clothing made for the pole that allows work on it. The reason is the material the Pole is made of, in this case stainless steel - the clothes slide on it, while the leather provides very good support and an excellent grip for the elements.

The Pole for this type of activity can be made of stainless steel, titanium, brass, chrome, they can be coated with gold, silicone, or "powder" to make the grip easier and stronger.

The vertical bar used for this sport can be 40, 42 or 45mm in diameter. Until recently, a 50 mm diameter bar was also used, but it is rarely used today.

The bar can rotate or be static. The elements are initially learned on a static bar in order for the body to get used to the new type of equipment, relax the mind and master some basics. When you already have a certain strength, you can start exercising on the rotating bar. Elements that were done on a static Pole on a rotating one can seem easier because less power is used to do the same element, or much more difficult because now the gravity and coordination are different.

Pole Fitness belongs to the category of aerial sports, and special attention must be paid to safety in this sport, since most of the elements are performed in the air. Spotter is a must on classes.

In addition to safety, important aspects are technique and speed of progress, ie. mastering the elements - slowly and in a certain order so that you can relax and your body learns and accepts new ways of using the muscles.

Your strength and flexibility are used on the Pole, as well as endurance.

This type of sport is very accessible and adaptable to different sports styles and has incredible opportunities for progress in every aspect for the individual. The group of people who are competitive (even unconsciously), who are very persistent and ready for challenges and the achievement of their "impossible" goals, are increasingly interested in it.

While practicing on the Pole, you learn all the elements and work on both sides of the body, regardless of which is dominant. At the same time, you work on flexibility and strengthening of the back and shoulders, your coordination, strengthening of the lower part of the body - hips, legs, balance, overall body mobility, rhythm, movements, fitness, endurance, and a lot more. Pole Fitness activates the body from head to toe, and the mind along with it. On the one hand, it is very demanding, while on the other hand, it is very rewarding - you can learn pretty quickly various difficult and "I can't do it" elements and movements, and there are also those "impossible" elements that will take a lot more time. People who play this sport are very persistent, optimistic, love challenges, and often go out of their comfort zone to overcome obstacles. This is what keeps many people in this sport - overcoming obstacles, strengthening the body and mind, understanding your body better. Success is quickly visible.

Regardless of previous experience in the sport, even good and experienced athletes can find Pole Fitness challenging. People who regularly go to the gym, or are active in various sports, have good strength and/or fitness, achieve results more easily, but not completely easy. Why? Because the Pole uses muscles that are not active every day, they are not active in other types of sports, and the body needs time to get used to new movements and to understand what is required of it. Repetition is the best way to reach the desired goal.
